resistance

A performance challenging the notion of time, illustrating how each individual perceives time differently.

Usually, dances are choreographed to counts of music so the dancers can stay on beat without looking directly at each other to stay synchronized. I chose to challenge this by giving dancers the movements and letting them express their inner tempos at will. I chose to blindfold the dancers to help them resist the urge to look at one another for reference to time. By inhibiting their sense of sight I believe it forces them to let go of the idea of time and spacial awareness, and dance as freely as choreographed.

The title stems from the resistance to conform to time and synchronization, but also the quality of movement resistance can create. Through time and specifically the length of a movement, a dancer can create resistance in their execution of a dance. This is a highly sought after quality within dance. The look of resistance is pleasing and often requires much skill and strength to achieve.
